Challenge
The installation of individually controlled HVAC systems in each apartment required meticulous planning and execution. With 26 apartments and shared spaces, Valley Mechanical Services needed to install 27 ductless units, with 2 or 3 zones depending on the apartment. With limited options to route the piping, installing them rooftop was the solution available. Furthermore, the necessity to protect and organize the piping efficiently was heightened by the plans to install solar panels on the rooftop.
James Bencivengo, managing partner at Valley Mechanical Services, state that “placing the pipes on the rooftop exposes them to the elements, posing a significant challenge”. Despite attempting various solutions such as fiberglass, plastic, and insulation, none proved effective. The persistent issue of crows pecking on the insulation compounded with the risk of damage from people stepping on the piping, leading to cracks and compromises in the system’s integrity.
