How To Choose The Right Lineset Cover: PVC vs. Metal

Every split system has a run of refrigerant piping, drain hose, and control wiring connecting the indoor unit to the outdoor one. Where that run isn’t buried in a wall, it needs a lineset cover — and the cover you choose determines whether the install still looks right in five years. Residential and light commercial: UV-resistant PVC


A mini split line set cover has one job on residential work: protect the run and make it look intentional. Everything else is secondary.

Commercial VRF: metal, and built for the roof


Scale up to a VRF or VRV system and the requirements change. You’re enclosing multiple linesets, usually across a roof, with far less tolerance for going back in once the system is live.

What is a lineset cover? A lineset cover is a channel system that encloses the refrigerant piping, drain hose, and control wiring running between the indoor and outdoor units of a split HVAC system. It protects those components from UV, weather, pests, and impact, and gives the run a finished appearance.

Can you install a lineset cover after the system is already running? Yes. Most covers use a two-piece design — a mounting base and a snap-on cover — so the existing insulated lines drop into the channel without disturbing the refrigerant circuit.

Is a lineset cover required by code? Under the 2021 IMC, Section 1109.2.2 requires refrigerant piping to be located within building elements or protective enclosures, with exceptions for piping above 7’3”, within 6 feet of the unit, or already protected from weather. On the residential side, IRC M1411.6.1 points to N1103.4.1, which requires weather-exposed insulation to be protected from sunlight, moisture, wind, and equipment maintenance — and specifically prohibits adhesive tape as that protection. Does lineset cover color matter? Why would a PVC lineset cover deform? Usually heat exposure combined with
